It can be easy to overlook the value of furniture, particularly office furniture. Not so for Dr. Andrea Silverstein, Dean of Academic Services at Lawrence Road Middle School, who felt that the furniture donated to her school meant so much more – and not just to her, but to her teachers and students as well.
“You can feel it immediately when you enter the building now. The new furniture makes our school seem more welcoming,” said Andrea. “This donation really helped enrich our environment. It makes everyone here feel valued. We really needed to replace some of our old furniture, which was practically falling apart.”
Thanks to a managed program of resale, recycling and donation, Green Standards was able to coordinate the delivery of office furniture and equipment from a leading American energy supply company to Lawrence Road.
Lawrence Road Middle School, located in Hempstead, New York, serves over 800 students including special education students and English language learners. Unfortunately, receiving funding from the state has been difficult for Lawrence Road. “Funding is hard to come by for furniture and other items,” said Andrea. “We really don’t get enough funding for essential items like furniture. Without the donation, we would have struggled to find these items, and we wouldn’t have been able to save the money that we can now spend on other materials the students need.”
The donation of over 50 items included things like computer monitors, plates and kitchen items, bookcases and desks, which were put to immediate use.
“The bookcases were really great for the students because it allowed us to expand our book collection and include books in Spanish for our bilingual students,” said Andrea. “Even the plates and kitchen items were so helpful because we were able to use them for our special education students in our life skills classes.”
Additionally, the main office and guidance office were refurnished, and a parent centre was added to the guidance suite, creating a welcoming environment for parents to read literature about ways to improve students’ studying habits, explore resources and meet with guidance councilors. Ms. Bibi Grizzle, President of the PTA, was amazed by the new look of the building. “The appearance is welcoming to our parents, and we are very grateful for the generous donations,” said Grizzle.
As for the energy supply company, they were able to help enrich the lives of students and teachers while making a positive impact on the environment by not sending their surplus office furniture and equipment to the landfill.
